The scholarship will fully support Joseph for two years as he pursues his graduate studies in Mechanical Engineering at the DARC Lab. The program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DoD laboratories.<\/p>\n
The scholarship is for Science, Mathematics & Research for Transformation (SMART) and is\u00a0funded by the Department of Defense (DOD), which offers full tuition, a yearly stipend, plus funding for supplies and health insurance. The award includes summer internships and a one-to-one service commitment to work as a civilian for the DOD at a sponsoring facility.<\/p>\n
From American Fork, Melville\u00a0attributes his success to, \u201ca good start at Utah County Academy of Sciences (UCAS) in Orem. It\u2019s an \u201cearly college high school\u201d with first rate faculty, and an opportunity to attend classes at UVU,\u201d says Melville.\u00a0 There he also participated in First Lego League, where he\u00a0got his first taste in the field of\u00a0robotics.<\/p>\n
Melville adds, \u201cWith this scholarship I plan\u00a0pursue a BS\/MS dual degree working with Professor Leang in the Design, Automation, Robotics & Control (DARC) Lab. I am especially thankful to my\u00a0sponsoring facility (Hill Air Force Base) and for the opportunity to focus on graduate research. To top it off I even have a guaranteed job after graduation!\u201d<\/p>\n
